You know what ruined the concept of entrepreneurship for a lot of people? The idea of the Four Hour Work Week. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Tim Ferriss but dude derailed an important facet of owning a business that more entrepreneurs need to embrace: the hustle.
There’s this underlying idea in the entrepreneur community that you’re only really successful if you build up a big business that operates without you. You know the scenario. You’re off lying on the beach in Bali while your team is back at the office slaving away. While this is a wonderful scenario that many of us would like to enjoy, it’s not always reality.
In fact, I’d argue that it’s rarely reality.
The people that I’ve worked with in the last ten years who have been the most successful, had the most tenacity and got places the fastest all had one thing in common: the hustle. They were people who weren’t afraid of doing hard work. Every day. No matter what.
It’s what I do, too.
Get my daughter to pre-school.
Work my 9-5pm.
Get in some very important family time.
Work from 8-2am.
Don’t get me wrong, I crave downtime, too. My weekends are mine and if I’m vacationing (which is rare, I’ll be honest), I do try to take some time that is completely disconnected from the world. However, when I’m getting up every day and I’ve got my game face on, I’ve got one word in mind: hustle.
This isn’t about being a masochist or trying to outwork other people either.
I have found that the majority of people who are getting up every day to embrace the hustle aren’t forcing themselves to do it. It’s just ingrained in their DNA. It’s fuelled 100% by passion that can not be turned off, quelled or smothered. A hot, fiery passion that ignites them into doing work they love and therefore seeing the rewards of that hard work.
I hustle because there’s not much else I’d rather be doing.
Look around you at the entrepreneurs you love. They work and they work hard. A few examples for me: Danielle LaPorte, Gary Vee, Marie Forleo, Scott Stratten and Darren Rowse (to name a few – there are many more amazing examples of hardworking folk.)
So, I invite you today to embrace the hustle. I promise you that fuelling those rockets of pure, uninhibited passion will bring you to your dreams and your goals way faster and you’ll feel damn good doing it.
