There are a lot of plug-ins out there that offer push-after-publish services whereby your new blog posts get sent out to every social network under the sun however, none are as simple and streamlined as the one offered by Jetpack. Jetpack is owned by Automattic, which is the founding company of WordPress and offers a whole suite of tools that are perfect for WordPress website and blog owners.
Step #1 – Install Jetpack and Connect to WordPress
The first step is to install Jetpack (free) and connect it to WordPress. Once you install it, you’ll be presented with the option to upgrade to a paid account — you don’t need the paid account to take advantage of the basic tools and the sharing option but you can review the features and decide for yourself. You will need a free WordPress.com account so if you don’t already have one, you’ll be prompted to create that during the installation process.
Once installed, activate the plug-in.
Step #2 – Update Your Sharing Settings
Now that the plug-in is installed, you’ll want to update your sharing settings. To do this, navigate down to Settings > Sharing and click “Connect” on the social media outlets that you want to push your new posts to. It’s worth noting that even if you connect every tool, you get to decide before you hit “publish” where you wish to share each post. This is useful if you’re curating content to specific outlets.
Click through each and connect your social media accounts. For Facebook, you can choose whether you want to push the posts to a profile or a page whereas every other connection simply goes to one connected profile.
Step #3 – Publish a Blog Post
Now that you’ve got the plug-in installed and configured, head over to your Add New Post page. On the right-hand side, under the publish settings, you’ll see the options available for social sharing under “Publicize.” Click to expand the details and you can check or un-check the social accounts you’d like the post to go to.
You can also customize your message, like I did, and add “Just published” or “New on the blog” to the beginning so people know it’s new content. It’s completely customizable so add whatever you wish here — this is a fantastic place to add any custom hash tags as well.
All in all, this is a great solution for pushing blog posts out to your favourite social networks. It lacks the ability to customize each social networking platform (there are other plug-ins that are great for this) but if you’re looking for a simple way to get your content out quickly, it’s worth checking this plug-in out.
